Food company Nestlé adds a high level of sugar and honey in leading baby food brands sold in lower and middle-income economies including India, but not in the European nations, a report said.
The findings of the report conducted by Public Eye, a Swiss investigative organization, revealed that food brands such as Cerelac, a cereal for children aged between six months and two years, and Nido, a follow-up milk formula brand for infants aged one and above, contain three grams of added sugar per serving, or equal to a sugar cube.
Contrary to this, such similar products contain five and six grams of sugar per serving sold in Ethiopia and Thailand respectively. Additionally, such food items had an average of more than three grams of added sugar in every serving in South Africa and Brazil. This move is against international guidelines that aim to prevent obesity and chronic diseases in children.
In India, where sales of such baby foods exceeded almost 250 dollars in 2022, tumbled nearly four percent on Thursday (April 18), registering its lowest fall in two years, after the study exposed the major drawback.
In a joint experiment by Public Eye and IBFAN (International Baby Food Action Network), samples of the company’s baby food items marketed in Asia, Africa, and Latin America were sent to a Belgian laboratory for examination.
The results also showed that no added sugar was found in the products sold at Philippines and main European markets, including the United Kingdom.
